Orange Sapphire

Orange Sapphire, 1.6 ct.

We originally bought this one as a windowed 1.98 carat multi-colored sapphire but after a recut to close the window and despite our intentions to keep its playful zoning intact, it turned out mostly evenly orange with only traces of previous hues remaining in it.

As with other color zoned stones, the camera exaggerates the zoning – it looks seamless in person. It’s fairly bright both indoors and outdoors and has persistently high saturation.

It should be said that the stone appears completely eye clean to the unaided eye when viewed close up in diffused daylight outdoors in its fully lit state – but in low light or if lit from the side, a single colorless crystal under the edge of the table facet can sometimes get outlined and become visible in it.

The crystals in this stone are colorless, so they essentially get overwhelmed by the saturated color whenever the stone is fully lit. As diffused daylight is the golden standard, it should be called eye clean; but we thought we'd err on the side of caution and categorize it as VVS.
