Vivid royal blues are difficult enough to find as it is: they need to be not too light, not too dark, not greenish or purplish, they need to have a clean, deep and consistent blue glow – but ones that are also properly eye clean close up, well cut and made into round shapes are extraordinarily rare.
Due to its crystal habit, sapphire rough is almost never naturally suitable for round shapes. Adding to that, royal blue rough is pricey enough to almost invariably make yield the second most important consideration when cutting (right after color), which leads to a whole lot of stones with large windows, heavy pavilions, off-center culets, badly made shapes etc.
It takes quite a bit of searching to find a stone with this highly desirable combination of color, clarity and cut criteria all aligned.
