It’s never easy to find a good candidate stone for recutting when it comes to this kind of highly saturated blue.
Blue sapphires of this type get pricey as weight rises and our chosen barion style lowers final yield very substantially, since sharply angled straight lines going directly from the girdle to the culet waste a lot of weight compared to the more commonly used step facets.
So when we came across an elongated royal blue oval of 1.85 carats that had some issues lighting up due to its deep pavilion, we knew that this was as close to the perfect chance as we were going to get. Our target yield was just over a carat and the finished stone luckily turned out a good bit over that.
Its brilliance has improved immensely – it now looks sharp, clean and polished.
On the flip side, traditional step cuts are often optimized for maximum color so it wasn’t too much of a surprise when cutting away nearly a third of the stone’s weight resulted in a lighter tone. It's now vivid blue rather than royal blue, but the tradeoff was worth it for the massive rarity boost that comes with a well-made fancy cut.
The single tiny crystal near the girdle requires light to fall at exactly the right angle to become visible when it’s being viewed up close, so the stone does actually look eye clean 99% of the time – but just for that 1% we're calling it “eye clean to VVS”.
