The risk involved in recutting this stone was substantial: it came with the cost of a 2.50+ ct. high quality vivid blue, but it had the potential to develop significant zoning during recutting which would have made its major selling point – color – completely moot. We went ahead and fixed its off-center culet, window and terrible facet distribution anyway, and the payoff was more than worth it.
Not only did the stone keep its gorgeous color, but it now also has a cut that’s beyond excellent for a vivid blue sapphire of 2+ carats, and the inclusions that were present near the surface of the pavilion got shaved away entirely so it’s also loupe clean as an added bonus.
