Green Spinel

Green Spinel, 0.95 ct.

A stone from our vault we never thought we’d upload.

How many people can offer, or claim to own, a true green spinel – a gem variety so impossibly rare most people don’t even realize it exists?

Scant few examples of green spinel have come out of the ground in South America over the last few decades, but they’re beige-yellowish-greenish to a fault, and a very far cry from the pure green of this stone. Likewise, dingy and very dark greenish-blue examples still get mined in Sri Lanka and Madagascar, but they’re invariably three tones darker than this and way too dark to be called true gem quality.

We have some examples of those in our personal sample collection as well, but unlike all of those, this stone from Elapatha, Ratnapura district, Sri Lanka is truly and fully green. Green enough to be easily mistaken for a green zircon at a glance.

We bought the stone in 2017, got a report for it in GRS Bangkok, and kept it with us ever since.

Its price is based on the only other similar example we have ever seen, a ~4 ct. piece of rough from the same locality with a GIA report, sold locally in early 2018.

A collector’s stone at any rate, and possibly the rarest gemstone we have ever offered.
